SF Climate Week: the Intersection of Mining Standards, Investment, and Renewable Energy

IRMA’s Law and Policy Director, Kristi Disney Bruckner, attended San Francisco Climate Week this April to meet with policymakers, civil society, investors, and others to discuss strategies for a more just and equitable energy transition.

A key event for IRMA at SF Climate Week was “Bridging the Capital Gap: Blended Finance for Renewable Energy and Critical Minerals Technologies.” Co-hosted by WICE and BlackRock on 22 April, the two-panel event focused on finance to meet climate targets, with discussions on investment and responsible sourcing for renewable energy technologies. The event brought together senior leaders from institutional investment, climate technology, international development, and law to discuss approaches for a responsible global energy transition.

The event provided a vital platform for IRMA to engage with investors on criteria for responsible mining. Investors use IRMA standards and independent, third-party data in IRMA audit reports for a transparent view of mine site performance that is essential for de-risking mineral supply chains.

Investing in renewable energy is investment in mining, either directly or indirectly. The investor and finance sector has a critical role to play in promoting and incentivizing responsible mining as part of their investments in the energy transition.

IRMA has a growing network of over 200 individuals from the investor and finance sector that gather regularly to better understand and promote responsible practices in the mining sector. As this network grows, we are thrilled to see more investor and finance organizations become IRMA Members.
