The Tenke Fugurume Mining (TFM) complex is located in the Lubudi Territory of the Lualaba Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The site is 80% owned by CMOC Group Limited and 20% by Gecamines. According to the site, production began in 2009 and has been under the CMOC Group’s ownership since 2016. The site produces copper cathode and cobalt hydroxide, with a current remaining life of mine of 17 years (based on 2025 data). The operation employs approximately 17,750 people and covers approximately 1,500 square kilometers within their concession. Approximately 400,000 people living in 122 villages and hamlets are potentially affected by the mine.
The scope of the CMOC Tenke Fungurume assessment will include operations and facilities at the Tenke Fungurume site, DRC, including 14 open pits, 5 processing lines, 5 tailings storage facilities, waste rock dumps, crushers, grinders, a quick lime plant and any other associated operational, processing and ancillary facilities at the Tenke Fungurume site, including waste management and treatment, health facilities and laboratories, and maintenance and emergency facilities. During the assessment the impacts and issues associated with the site will be reviewed, and each operation and facility will be visited. TFM data indicates all facilities in scope are located within the mine concession area.
Of the 26 chapters in the IRMA Standard for Responsible Mining, the operator proposes that all chapters apply except for the following: Chapters 2.2 Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC),4.7 Cyanide Management, and 4.8 Mercury Management. The relevancy of chapters 2.2., 4.7. and 4.8. will be verified during the desktop review.
