Assessment scope
Sibanye-Stillwater SA PGM Marikana started operations in 1987 and employs more than 24,000 people as of 2024. The operation of approximately 214 square km includes underground extraction. On-site or co-located facilities include smelters, refiners and concentrators, an explosive factory, tailings storage facilities.
Of the 26 chapters in the IRMA Standard for Responsible Mining, the operator suggests Chapters 2.2 Free, Prior and Informed Consent, 3.6 Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining, 4.7 Cyanide Management, and 4.8 Mercury Management do not apply. The independent audit firm will verify the operator’s suggestions.
