Canada’s proposed permitting reforms
Achieving long-term project certainty and regulatory efficiency relies on a foundation of shared trust.
🇨🇦 IRMA has submitted a formal response to the Government of Canada’s proposed permitting reforms.
Our key recommendations focus on aligning efficiency with risk management:
📍 Securing Timeline Predictability: Maintaining thorough environmental and social impact assessments helps prevent the community friction and legal challenges that can inadvertently create long-term project delays.
⚖️ Leveraging Proven Frameworks: The IRMA Standard offers a practical, site-level tool for verifying Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) and human rights due diligence, translating abstract policy into clear, measurable data for investors.
🤝 Advancing Shared Goals: Following the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) resolution regarding IRMA, we recommend a collaborative dialogue to explore how independent verification can protect constitutional rights while simultaneously unlocking value for the industry.
Building the critical minerals infrastructure for the energy transition requires deep site-level accountability to ensure projects succeed over the long term.
We look forward to working with the Canadian government and partners across the sector to advance these shared goals.
