Sorowako

Assessment scope

PT Vale’s Sorowako nickel mining operations are permitted through 2045. Mining began on site in 1968 and has been under current ownership since 2007. The multi-mine operation employs approximately 3,000 people and covers approximately 20 square km (the larger concession covers 700 sq km).

Facilities within the scope of the assessment include: open-pit(s), crusher(s), grinder(s) hydro power dam(s), smelter(s), scrap recycler(s), mine waste disposal, other waste management, maintenance and mechanics, laboratories, truck/rail loading, water treatment, and worker housing. Potentially affected communities include Towuti Village, Nuha Village, Wasuponda, and Malili.

Of the 26 chapters in the IRMA Standard for Responsible Mining, the operator suggests Chapters 2.2 Free, Prior and Informed Consent, 3.6 Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining, 4.7 Cyanide Management, and 4.8 Mercury Management do not apply. The verification body ERM CVS will evaluate these suggestions.
