Quellaveco

Assessment scope

The Quellaveco mining operation is located in Peru’s Moquegua Region. The site is owned 60% by Anglo American PLC and 40% by Mitsubishi Corporation. Mining operations began in 2022 under the current ownership structure. The operation produces copper concentrate and molybdenum concentrate. Under the current operating plan, the mine is expected to have a lifespan of more than 30 years. The operation employs approximately 4,500 people and spans approximately 23,310 hectares within the site boundary.

The scope of the IRMA assessment will include the full range of the operation and facilities including:

• open pit mine operations;
• crushing, grinding, and flotation circuits;
• tailings storage facilities including tailings dams;
• other waste storage and mine rock storage areas;
• ore and concentrate storage;
• laboratories, maintenance workshops and fuel storage;
• water supply and treatment;
• worker housing and associated facilities;
• emergency response, health, safety and safety infrastructure;
• truck loading facilities; and
• the Vizcachas Freshwater Dam.

Of the 26 chapters in the IRMA Standard for Responsible Mining, the operator proposes that all chapters apply except for the following:

• 3.4 Mining in conflict affected or high risk areas,
• 3.6 Artisanal and small-scale mining,
• 4.7 Cyanide Management, and
• 4.8 Mercury Management.

Chapter relevancy will be determined during the audit.
